A probable scam
The authors of the hack then claimed to have confidential information on Mr. Trump and his administration, or on “The true origin of the coronavirus”, and asked for the payment of cryptocurrencies to reveal their content. A mechanism reminiscent of common practices in online scams.
A spokesperson for the “Trump 2020” campaign, Tim Murtaugh, confirmed the hack in a statement and said he is working with police to find out the source. “No sensitive data was exposed because the site does not contain any”, he stressed.
