A young Palestinian, injured last week by Israeli army fire in Gaza, has died, the Palestinian health ministry said on Saturday (August 28th). Omar Hassan Abu Al-Nile, 12, “Succumbed to his injuries”, the ministry said in a statement.
He was hit on Saturday, August 21, during unrest on the sidelines of a demonstration near the separation barrier between the Gaza Strip and the Jewish state, the official Palestinian agency Wafa said.
Around 100 people attended the boy’s funeral in the afternoon in the Al-Tofah neighborhood in eastern Gaza City, a journalist from Agence France-Presse noted.
In the evening, clashes erupted between the Israeli army and Palestinians responding to the call of several Gazan factions to protest in particular against the blockade imposed for nearly fifteen years by Israel on the overpopulated Palestinian enclave. The military used tear gas and stun grenades as protesters burned tires.
Eleven Palestinians were injured in the clashes on Saturday evening, including three from live ammunition, according to the Gazan Ministry of Health. For their part, Israeli firefighters reported that incendiary balloons launched from Gaza had started bushfires in Israel.
Israeli strikes
About 40 people were injured last Saturday by Israeli fire, according to the Gazan authorities, including Omar Hassan Abu Al-Nile and a 32-year-old man who died on Wednesday. A member of the Israeli security forces, hit by gunfire, is still in critical condition.
The Hebrew state subsequently carried out air raids against “Four weapons manufacturing and storage sites” of Hamas, the Islamist movement in power in Gaza. Other strikes, which did not claim any casualties, took place overnight Monday to Tuesday, in retaliation for the launching of incendiary balloons which had caused bushfires on the Israeli side. New clashes, less violent, also took place Wednesday on the border between Gaza and Israel.
