WASHINGTON LETTER

Both literally and figuratively, Jill Biden seems to have vowed to lend a helping hand to her husband. On the evening of Super Tuesday, March 3, the wife of Joe, the Democratic nomination contestant for the November presidential election, pounced on a disruptor who was trying to break into the scene, where the former vice -president delivered his victory speech. An instinctive and protective gesture praised by the American media and social networks.

Already on February 11, during a meeting in New Hampshire, Jill Biden had intervened, smiling but determined, to chase a man heading for the husband from the platform. The troublemaker must have weighed twice as much, but the thin sixties had grabbed him by the shoulders, before exfiltrating him firmly.

These acts of bravery immediately sparked comparisons on social media between the current First Lady and the one who could take her place if Joe Biden won: the match did not really turn out to the advantage of Melania Trump. The former model, unchangingly corseted in tailor-made clothes, would never have lifted a finger to protect her husband's president, quipped Internet users.

His presence at eclipses with Donald Trump, the gestures of annoyance towards him surprised by the cameras, the notorious infidelities of her husband feed, it is true, the story of a presidential couple above all attached to saving appearances. The lack of political sense of Melania Trump, observed on several occasions, also contributes to giving the first lady the image of an above-ground creature, frozen in a photogenic role.

"Jill Biden's husband"

None of this among the Biden. Jill, who has been with Joe for forty-three years, is the backbone of a family plagued by tragedy. Their obvious complicity has accompanied these decades of public life. With good humor, Joe Biden often presents himself as "Jill Biden's husband", a way of emphasizing the crucial role she plays within their "team".

The couple also readily presents as proof of their unwavering ties the long period of reflection – two years and five marriage proposals – which preceded their union. So a young professor of literature recently divorced, Jill joined the Biden clan three years after the accidental death of Joe's first wife and their little daughter. By marrying this nine-year-old senator at 25, her eldest and father of two boys, Beau and Hunter, she immersed herself in politics, no doubt beyond what she had imagined.
