The Republicans blocked it in the Senate, it returns to the House of Representatives. A special commission on the murderous assault on Capitol Hill led on January 6 by supporters of Donald Trump will be created, Democrat Nancy Pelosy announced Thursday, June 24.
“This morning, with great solemnity and sadness, I announce that the Chamber will establish a special commission on the January 6 insurrection”, conducted when US parliamentarians gathered to certify Joe Biden’s victory over the Republican billionaire in the November 2020 presidential election. “It is fundamental that we seek the truth of what happened and make sure that an attack like this cannot happen again”, continued the President of the House of Representatives, with a Democratic majority.

Response to Republican Senators’ Refusal to Investigate
At the end of May, the majority of Republican senators had opposed the creation of an independent commission, with five members chosen by the Democrats and five others by the Republicans, on the exact model of the one created after 9/11. They considered that the parliamentary investigations already underway and the work of the police were sufficient. For lack of sufficient support, even though six Republican senators had rallied to the Democrats, Congress had not approved its launch.
A month later, the Democrats therefore announced this new commission, which was supposed to centralize the multiple parliamentary inquiries already launched. Composed of elected officials, it risks being perceived as less impartial. “I absolutely believe that it would have been preferable to have an external commission”, admitted Mme Pelosi at a press conference on Thursday.
“But I have no intention of shying away from our responsibilities”she continued, saying she hopes House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy appoints “Responsible people” to sit on the special committee. “It is obvious that Republicans are afraid of the truth”, she asserted.
Mme Pelosi did not set a deadline for submitting a final report. “The timeline will take as long as it takes them to investigate the causes” of the assault, she stressed.
Since January, the federal police have deployed considerable means to identify the some 800 people involved in the assault on Capitol Hill, which shocked America. So far, 500 have been found and charged for more or less heavy counts.
