After several months of suspense, Joe Biden was invited to deliver his first policy speech to Congress on April 28, shortly before the symbolic date of his 100 days in office. An invitation accepted by the US president, said a spokesperson for the White House.

In accordance with tradition, it was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who invited him, in a letter on Tuesday April 13, to “Share [sa] vision to face the challenges and opportunities of this historic moment ”, when his administration tries to emerge from the pandemic and raise the economy of the world’s leading power.

US presidents traditionally give this general policy speech to both houses of Congress, meeting in extraordinary session, in the first weeks of their mandate. In the following years, their address to Congress was called the “State of the Union speech”.

A postponed meeting

This time, the Covid-19 pandemic and the deadly assault on Capitol Hill on January 6, as well as the ensuing concerns about the security of the seat of the United States Congress, have postponed this major political meeting.

“Almost 100 days ago, when you took the oath, you swore, in a hopeful spirit, that help was coming. Now, thanks to your historic governance, which seeks a profound transformation, help has arrived ”, said in her letter Nancy Pelosi, close ally of Joe Biden. The Democrat did not specify what format would take, in the midst of a pandemic, this speech usually given in front of hundreds of parliamentarians and guests gathered in the hemicycle.
