In Donald Trump's trial, the prosecution uncovers the roots of the Ukrainian affair

As indifferent to the arithmetic of the Senate which promises an acquittal for Donald Trump at the end of his impeachment trial, the democratic prosecutors continued for the second consecutive day their work of persuasion, Thursday, January 23. Without it being known with certainty if it targets the senators assembled before them, or the voters who will vote in November.

The Democrats have been confronted for two days with a double Republican speech. Senators from the Grand Old Party keep saying during break periods that they hear nothing new after opposing the Democrats' requests for further inquiries on Tuesday.

The arguments of the latter, long exposed to the risk of numerous repetitions, Thursday, had a double objective. Justify the legitimacy of the articles of indictment voted by the Chamber on December 18 in the context of the Ukrainian case revealed by a whistleblower, and preventively weaken the defense of the President of the United States whose lawyers will speak at from Saturday.

Donald Trump is accused of conditioning crucial military aid to Ukraine and the invitation to Washington of his counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to the opening of investigations by Kiev targeting some of his political opponents, including the former vice-president Joe Biden, one of the favorites at the presidential nomination.

Paradise for corruption

Democrats know that the Ukrainian issue presents a difficulty for them: the presence of the son of former vice-president, Hunter Biden, on the board of directors of a Ukrainian gas company, from 2014 to 2019. They therefore tried to demonstrate that the ethical concerns put forward by Donald Trump to justify the opening of investigations allowing him to ricochet his father were sewn with white thread.

While Ukraine was afflicted with a reputation as a haven for corruption, Donald Trump did not care for a second during the first two years of his presidency, the Democrats said. The President of the United States, they continued, only worried when he was able to associate him with Joe Biden, after the coming to power of a new president who had made this fight a priority national.

The report of the telephone conversation with his counterpart in which Donald Trump had formalized this give-and-take, on July 25, attests to it, assured the prosecutors of the dismissal trial, whereas the president does not stop on the contrary claiming that his conversation had been " perfect ".
