How the United States and Iran became enemies

In early 2020, the relationship between Iran and the United States deteriorated further. On January 3, Ghassem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's elite unit, was assassinated on the orders of Donald Trump. Five days later, a Ukrainian plane was shot down by Iranian missiles. Faced with the disaster, the Iranian government has admitted that the shooting was a mistake, but stresses the responsibility of the United States in escalating tensions.

For the past 40 years, the two countries have opposed each other and displayed tenacious rivalry. But it has not always been so. From 1953 to 1979, Iran and the United States were allies. The US Embassy hostage-taking in Tehran on November 4, 1979, turned everything upside down.
