Five people were injured on Saturday (December 28th) in a stabbing attack on a rabbi’s residence near New York, a Jewish association said.

"A call has arrived reporting a massive stabbing attack" against "The residence of a Hasidic rabbi"said this Orthodox Jewish association, OJPAC (Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council), on Twitter.

"Five stab wounds, all Hasidic Jews, were transported to local hospitals", said the association. OJPAC said two of the injured were in critical condition.

"Suspect fled, but is now in detention"said Ramapo’s police department in a Facebook post, confirming that five people were injured in the attack.

CBS television for its part claimed that a man armed with a machete had burst into the house of this rabbi, located in Monsey, 50 km north of New York, where people had gathered at the occasion of the celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Monsey is home to a large Jewish community.

According to Yossi Gestetner, co-founder of OJPAC for the Hudson Valley region, interviewed by the New york times, one of the victims is the rabbi’s son. “There were several dozen people in the house. It was a Hanukkah celebration ", said Gestetner again.

Several anti-Semitic attacks have taken place in recent years in the United States. On December 10, a shooting in a kosher grocery store in Jersey City in the suburbs of New York had killed four, and the two attackers had been killed. Police described the attack as"Act of domestic terrorism fueled by anti-Semitism and anti-law enforcement views".
