Donald Trump’s new attack on postal voting

The American election got to the heart of the matter. In a campaign every day more aggressive between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, North Carolina indeed launched on September 5 the postal voting operations for the ballot of November 3.

But Thursday, September 17, President Donald Trump, who has been sowing confusion for several months over the conduct of the upcoming election, took another step in his criticism of postal voting. He claimed that the outcome of the November 3 presidential election may never be determined with precision. With quotes and print capitals, he tweeted:

“Because of this new and unprecedented mass of spontaneous bulletins which will be sent by voters this year, the outcome of the November 3 election may NEVER BE PRECISELY DETERMINED, which some hope. A new electoral disaster yesterday. Stop this Ballot Madness. “

Twitter added under the presidential tweet a warning message redirecting to a platform page indicating that “Postal voting is legal and safe” and “Experts and data confirm it”.

A few hours later, the president – who nevertheless suggested that Americans vote twice, causing an uproar – added, still on Twitter : “In the great state of North Carolina, some people have received TWO BULLETINS. TRUCKED ELECTION in sight! “. This is not the first time that the outgoing president, still ahead in voting intentions by his Democratic rival Joe Biden, has taken up the postal vote.

The postal vote recommended against the Covid-19

In the health context of the coronavirus epidemic, and given the calls to respect a physical distance, this voting method is recommended this year as an alternative to traveling to a classic polling station. But Donald Trump has been saying for weeks, without providing any evidence to support his claims, that postal voting is particularly vulnerable to fraud.

In sixteen states, it is only authorized on certain grounds (displacement, illness). In the 34 others, any voter registered on the lists is free to vote by post.

In 2016, during Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton, a quarter of the votes were cast in this way.
