Antony Blinken, Alejandro Mayorkas, Avril Haines, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Jake Sullivan and John Kerry… President-elect Joe Biden announced on Monday November 23 a round of appointments to his future government, with the crucial post of secretary of ‘State Antony Blinken, who will be responsible from January 20 to conduct American diplomacy.

At 58, Mr. Blinken is a top foreign policy advisor to Joe Biden and was the State Department’s number two under President Barack Obama, while Mr. Biden was vice president. A strong supporter of multilateralism, Mr. Blinken would succeed Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State to President Donald Trump, a supporter of “Maximum pressure” against Iran and an uncompromising policy towards China.

After Democrat Hillary Clinton was defeated by Republican Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, Blinken became one of the founders of WestExec Advisors, a Washington-based firm advising large corporations on geopolitical risks.

Barack Obama’s former secretary of state, John Kerry, will be Joe Biden’s special emissary on the climate, a sign of the importance the future US president attaches to this issue.

The Democrat will also appoint a Hispanic for the first time, Alejandro mayorkas, internal security.

Avril Haines, former Deputy Director of the CIA (2013-2015) and Deputy National Security Advisor (2015-2017) will become Director of National Intelligence.

This team also includes two women in key positions. April Haines, Deputy Director of the CIA from 2013 to 2015 and Deputy National Security Advisor from 2015 to 2017, will become Director of National Intelligence. She will be the most senior woman in the intelligence community. African American Linda Thomas-Greenfield becomes ambassador to the UN.

“I need a team ready on the first day”Joe Biden wrote in a press release announcing these appointments, while Donald Trump still refuses to concede defeat in the November 3 presidential election. “These individuals are as experienced and used to crisis management as they are innovative and imaginative”, he continued.
