In Northern Ireland, DUP chief resigns after just three weeks

Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Edwin Poots leaves the party's headquarters in Belfast on June 17, 2021.

The leader of the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Edwin Poots, announced in a statement on Thursday (June 17th) that he was stepping down from his post, just three weeks after taking office to replace Arlene Foster.

“I asked the president of the party to start an internal electoral process to allow a new leader to be elected”, he said.

Opposition to his choice for the post of Prime Minister

The announcement came a few hours after 24 of the 28 regional DUP elected representatives expressed their opposition to the choice of Edwin Poots for the post of premier of the British province.

Edwin Poots’ resignation adds to political instability in Northern Ireland, amid a row over him between Britain and the European Union, as a protest movement grows over post trade restrictions -Brexit with the rest of the UK.
