Israel reintroduces weekend weekend restrictions

In Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv, on July 16.

Faced with the resurgence of cases of contamination with the new coronavirus, Israel reinstated, Friday, July 17, measures “Intermediaries to avoid general containment”. These are restrictions applied this weekend regarding the opening of shops and leisure: residents will be able to leave their homes, but shopping centers, stores, swimming pools, zoos, trams and museums will be closed Friday afternoon to Sunday morning (Sunday is a working day in Israel), the government said in a statement.

Tighter confinement, with a ban on leaving home, could be imposed every weekend starting next Friday if MEPs approve the measure by then, Israeli radio reported.

Limited gatherings

The government has also announced that rallies will be limited, this time every day, to 10 people in confined spaces and 20 people outdoors, while restaurants will only be able to carry out take-out.

Israel reopened schools and many businesses in May, after being forced into containment in March. But with the rate of infection rising sharply in recent weeks, many public health experts have said that the government has acted too quickly and neglected to take the epidemiological measures necessary to control the epidemic.

Israel, which has a population of 9 million, has registered 377 deaths and more than 44,000 cases of contamination.
