Police officer charged with murder of George Floyd on third charge

He was already charged with murder and manslaughter. Derek Chauvin, the police officer accused of causing the death of George Floyd, is the subject of a third charge, that of “willful violence resulting in death”, announced Thursday, March 11 the judge who presides over the debates in Minneapolis.

“The trial is very painful and the family wants to mourn. We are happy that all legal avenues have been explored and that the trial can continue ”George Floyd’s family lawyer Ben Crump said in a statement. The trial began on Tuesday with the selection of the first jurors. The substantive debate is due to start on March 29 and a verdict is expected at the end of April.

” I can not breathe “

Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white policeman, 19 of whom worked for the Minneapolis Police Department, had remained kneeling for nearly nine minutes on the neck of the black forty-something, handcuffed and pinned to the ground on his stomach, during his arrest on May 25 2020. In front of bewildered passers-by, George Floyd had launched twenty times ” I can not breathe “ before passing out. He could not be revived by the doctors who arrived on the spot a little later.

Derek Chauvin’s lawyer believes that his client is not responsible for the death of the African-American who, according to him, succumbed to an overdose of fentanyl. George Floyd’s death sparked historic anger, in the United States and around the world, against racism and police brutality.
