French kidnapped in national park in central Mexico

A Frenchman named Frederic Michel and a Mexican man were kidnapped on Sunday (November 24th) by strangers in central Mexico in a national park, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) told AFP. Mexico City.

The French and Mexican were on Sunday morning an excursion in the national park aboard all-terrain vehicles when they were intercepted by men in arms, according to the daily newspapers Reforma and El Universal. The two men were forcibly taken aboard their own vehicles.

2019 marked by an increase in kidnappings

The authorities have set up a system to crisscross the area, which is part of the municipality of Zinacantepec, west of Mexico City, and try to find these two people.

The year 2019 is marked in Mexico by a sharp increase in kidnappings, and violent crime in general, compared to the previous year. Between January and October, 1,690 people were kidnapped in Mexico, up 37.7 percent from the same period in 2018, according to figures from the Mexican association Alto Al Secuestro ("Stop kidnapping") . This corresponds to an average of five abductions per day over the period considered.

According to the same association, the State of Mexico is the second largest in the country in terms of kidnappings, after the state of Veracruz, in the east, hit by the violence of drug cartels.
