Successive protests over the weekend did not convince Donald Trump. The President of the United States has attempted to minimize the number of marchers who protested on the streets of the federal capital on Saturday against the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police on May 25. Acknowledging the ongoing de-escalation a week after the riots in the rallies, Donald Trump nonetheless announced the withdrawal of the Washington National Guard.

Indifferent to the demands of the demonstrators, he devoted the majority of the messages published on his Twitter account, Sunday, June 7, to support the Republican candidates he chose on the eve of the primaries, which will be held in a good part of the States -United. He also mocked his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, who had knelt on the ground the previous week in tribute to the victim, a gesture repeated by thousands of demonstrators and became synonymous with denouncing police violence. The President of the United States shared a message that "The cowards kneel".

A roundtable devoted to policing was well scheduled on the presidential agenda, Monday afternoon, but theattorney general of the United States (Minister of Justice), William Barr, assured Sunday that "Painting the police with the broad brush of systematic racism is really a disservice for the men and women who risk their lives every day to protect the American people". He opposed any measure which would reduce the legal immunity enjoyed by agents in the course of their duties because "It would certainly lead to a withdrawal from the police".

Bill introduced Monday

The Republican Party should therefore oppose a bill presented to Congress by Democrats on Monday. Among other things, it plans to create a national registry for police officers who commit blunders, make it easier to prosecute officers, reform the recruitment and training of police, and ban practices such as strangulation, which cost George Floyd his life. The bill is also expected to face stiff opposition from police unions. One of them has already withdrawn his support for Joe Biden for the November presidential election.

Donald Trump interpreted the calls made in processions to reduce the budgets of the police services, managed at the municipal level, as the proof that "The Democratic Party is controlled by the radical left". Minneapolis City Council embarked on this path on Sunday, considering a reform of the local police impossible in the state. In New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio also spoke of a reduction in this budget in favor of social services in the megalopolis.
