Roland-Garros will take place in September

"The containment measures in force make it impossible to prepare for the tournament and, consequently, to organize it on the dates initially planned," explained the French Tennis Federation.

Due to the epidemic due to the coronavirus, the Roland-Garros tennis tournament has decided to postpone its 2020 edition. The event, scheduled from May 24 to June 7, should be run from September 20 to October 4, explained the French Tennis Federation:

"The Covid-19 health crisis affects all populations. In order to guarantee the health and safety of all those involved in the preparation of the tournament, the French Tennis Federation has decided to organize the 2020 edition of Roland-Garros from September 20 to October 4, 2020. "

The tournament will thus theoretically start a week after the men's final of the US Open in New York.

ATP and WTA circuits stopped

Last week, the Parisian Grand Slam was still reassuring, saying to think about "Different scenarios", but without "Postponement or cancellation". The idea then was to " minimize the risk of contagion ", for example by avoiding "Too high a concentration of people".

But that was before the professional tennis circuit decided to stop. On Thursday, March 12, three days after the cancellation of Indian Wells’s meeting in the United States, the men's side of the ATP announced a six-week suspension from its tournaments until April 26.

The WTA, the umbrella organization for the female professional circuit, reacted a little later. On Monday, it announced that the Stuttgart, Istanbul and Prague tournaments were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which was a suspension from competition until May 2.

The Stuttgart tournament was scheduled for April 20-26, as was the Istanbul tournament, while Prague was scheduled to host the best players on the circuit from April 27 to May 2.
Unlike the ATP, which manages the men's circuit, the WTA had not yet announced a freeze on its circuit due to the coronavirus.

To this were added, in France, the containment measures announced in recent days by the government. "The containment measures in force make it impossible to prepare and, therefore, organize it on the dates initially planned", highlights the organization of the tournament.
