  Thirteenth victory in a row for Podoroska

First player from qualifying to reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros and first Argentinian player to reach the last four of the Paris tournament for sixteen years: two achievements accumulated by Nadia Podoroska after her victory in straight sets (6-2 , 6-4), this Tuesday, October 6, on the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, 5^e world player.

Aged 23, the young woman born in Rosario in a family of Ukrainian origin remained on twelve victories in a row before this match (including seven at Roland Garros).

Classified at 131^e World rank, Argentina had few references on the WTA circuit and in Grand Slams, more used to playing tournaments at a lower level. Before coming to Paris, she won the ITF tournament in Saint-Malo, France.

• First Grand Slam semi-final for Iga Swiatek

Podoroska will have to face the young Polish Iga Swiatek (54^e), who qualified at 19 for her first Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros, dominating the Italian Martina Trevisan, 159^e world, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 Tuesday night. In the previous round, Swiatek had knocked down number 1 seed Simona Halep.

• A first for Danielle Collins too

She had never gone beyond the second round in two participations at Roland Garros. It is therefore also a first for Danielle Collins: the American, 57^e world player, beat Tunisian Ons Jabeur, 35^e world (6-4, 4-6, 6-4), and for the first time reached the quarter-finals of the Paris tournament.

The match between Collins and Jabeur, last round of 16 in the women’s draw, was to be played on Monday, October 5, but the rain had prevented its holding, and it had been rescheduled on Tuesday.

Danielle Collins, 26, who beat 2016 tournament winner Garbiñe Muguruza in the third round, will face compatriot Sofia Kenin for a place in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
