UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) has opened a disciplinary investigation against Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic because of his “Possible financial interest in a betting site”, announced the European body on Monday April 26.

At this stage, the organization has designated “An ethical and disciplinary inspector” to investigate “A potential violation of UEFA disciplinary rules” by the 39-year-old champion, who has just extended for a season with AC Milan. “Further information on this case will be communicated in due course”, adds the body to conclude its brief press release.

On April 14, the Swedish daily Aftonbladet was worried about the risk of disciplinary sanctions weighing on Ibrahimovic, from both UEFA and FIFA (International Football Federation), when he had just regained the selection for the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. Aftonbladet, the former star scorer of Paris-Saint-Germain has been, since 2018, one of the shareholders of Bethard, an online betting site based in Malta, via his company Unknown AB, in contradiction with the rules of the two football regulatory bodies.
