Stade Rennes chooses Bruno Genesio as new coach to succeed Julien Stéphan

Stade Rennes chose Bruno Genesio, former coach of Olympique Lyonnais (OL), to succeed Julien Stéphan, a source close to the club said on Wednesday (March 3rd), confirming information from the daily The team.

The Breton club announced on Monday the resignation of Julien Stéphan; since then, the name of Bruno Genesio circulated in the media as first choice. Born in Lyon, the former professional footballer, who played as a midfielder, notably coached OL from 2015 to 2019, before an experience in China, at Beijing Guoan (2019-2021).

Coach with a virgin record, but with solid references, Bruno Genesio, 54, finds himself in Ligue 1 in a club that has had little success as an opponent (three wins in eight confrontations), but never too far from Lyon either: he will work with Florian Maurice, current technical director of Stade Rennes, another Gone, whom he worked with for more than ten years at OL.

To replace Julien Stéphan, Florian Maurice drew on Monday the robot portrait of his successor, a trainer “Able to develop play and to trust the young people of the training center”, corresponding to the profile of Bruno Genesio.

Appointed in December 2018, Julien Stéphan preferred to throw in the towel after a new defeat on Friday against Nice (2-1), which worsened the Rennes results crisis in 2021 with only one victory in ten games.

Rennes travels to Lyon on Wednesday evening for the 28e day of the Ligue 1 championship, with interim Philippe Bizeul, former assistant to Stéphan, on the bench.
