Villeurbanne crowned champion of France for the twentieth time

ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne players celebrate their victory after winning the final of the French basketball championship against JDA Dijon on June 26, 2021 in Rouen.

Villeurbanne was crowned champion of France for the twentieth time in its history by beating Dijon (87 to 74) on Saturday June 26 in Rouen.

ASVEL retains its title, gleaned in 2019 and not awarded in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the second national title this season for the Rhone after the Coupe de France, won in April (77-61) against… the JDA Dijon.

Favorites although diminished by the absences of their international tricolors (gone to prepare for the Olympic Games), the men of TJ Parker nevertheless gained the upper hand in the second quarter, leading by 11 points at the break (44-33).

Eager to win a first league title before the departure of their coach, Laurent Legname, the Dijonnais, first in the regular season, seemed overwhelmed after the first quarter against the ASVEL machine – like Axel Julien (9 points) or David Holston (5 points), much less decisive than usual. On the other side, David Lighty (21 points) was crowned man of the match.
