Oil pollution in the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Ida

Skimming and containment systems have been set up in the Gulf of Mexico, near the Louisiana coast, to respond to oil pollution discovered after the passage of Hurricane Ida, Agence France-Presse has learned. Sunday, September 5 with the American Coast Guard.

The affected area is located off Port Fourchon, a port in Louisiana (southern United States) located about 160 kilometers from New Orleans, which is primarily engaged in the storage and delivery of oil.

Diving team

A Texas offshore oil rig company, Talos Energy, dispatched a dive team on Sunday to try to determine the source of the oil spill. The latter’s teams have “Identified a 12-inch pipeline not belonging to Talos moved from its original location in the trench and which appears to be bent and opened, announced the group in a press release. In addition, two 4-inch pipes not belonging to Talos have been identified nearby, which are open and appear to have been previously abandoned ”. Talos Energy specifies that in 2017 it ceased production in the area affected by the oil spill, by plugging the sources and removing its network of pipes.

Carrying 240 km / h winds, Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coast a week ago, causing damage “Catastrophic”, according to local authorities. Ida, turned into a storm, then continued on its way and in particular affected New York and its region.

The Gulf of Mexico, rich in hydrocarbons, is one of the major oil production areas in the United States. This is where the Deepwater Horizon platform exploded in 2010, triggering an oil spill considered the most serious in history.
