Accused and disavowed, Liz Truss resigns, less than two months after coming to power

After the debacle around her mini-budget and the many calls for her resignation, the British Prime Minister only lasted forty-four days at 10 Downing Street. Liz Truss announced Thursday, October 20, that she would step down as leader of the Conservative Party as soon as a successor is elected.

“Given the situation, I cannot fulfill the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party”said the leader of the Conservative Party, who becomes the shortest-lived head of government in contemporary UK history.

An internal party election will be organized in the coming week to find a successor. Until then, Liz Truss will remain at the helm of government to run day-to-day business, she said.
