United States considers premature to discuss mediation with Iran on nuclear deal

Ned Price, in Washington, February 2, 2021.

It is not a “no”, but we will still have to wait. The United States believes that it is too early to accept Iran’s proposal that the European Union intervene to put the Iranian nuclear deal back on track, the State Department spokesman said on Tuesday. American, Ned Price.

Joe Biden’s administration “Will consult our allies, our partners, the Congress, before reaching the moment when we will discuss directly with the Iranians, and where we will be inclined to some form of proposal”, he said at a press conference.

The new American president wants to return to the 2015 agreement, supposed to prevent Tehran from acquiring atomic weapons, from which his predecessor Donald Trump withdrew the United States in 2018. But he wants Iran to return first in the nails of his commitments, which he began to free himself in response to the American sanctions restored three years ago.

“Ready to follow the path of diplomacy”

The Iranians have demanded that Washington take the first step by lifting these sanctions. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday suggested a form of “Synchronization” between the actions of the two countries, which could, according to him, be coordinated by the European Union.

Ned Price did not completely rule out such a solution, but he judged it to be, for the moment, premature. “Regarding the proposals put on the table, I would like to come back to the proposal that we put on the table” : “We are ready to follow the path of diplomacy if Iran once again fully respects its commitments”, did he declare.

However, he felt that the Iranian nuclear issue was “A challenge that cannot wait” and that the United States must “Manage immediately”.
