Four people were killed in an attack in Beersheba, the main city in the Negev desert, in southern Israel, Israeli rescue workers announced on Tuesday (March 22nd). In a statement, the Israeli police said they suspected an act “terrorist”.

Police say a man stabbed a woman at a gas station, then ran his car over a cyclist before continuing his run to a nearby shopping center where he got out of his vehicle to stab a man and a woman . Civilians present on the spot opened fire in the direction of the assailant and killed him.

Series of knife attacks

The assault was not immediately claimed. Israeli media said the assailant, an Israeli Arab, was a former high school teacher once imprisoned for his alleged ties to the Islamic State organization.

The Jewish state had not experienced such a deadly attack for years. Several stabbing attacks have occurred in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank in recent weeks.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who had just returned from a summit in Egypt with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and the leader de facto of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed Ben Zayed, follows the latest developments in Beersheba in real time and holds “consultation” with the Minister of Public Security and the Chief of Police, his office in Jerusalem said.
