The Ecuadorian electoral drama is tightening. It is therefore the conservative Guillermo Lasso who will contest, on April 11, the second round of the presidential election against the economist Andres Arauz, dolphin of the former socialist president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), announced the National Council. election (CNE) on the night of Saturday 20 to Sunday 21 February.
Young economist Andrés Arauz, 36, led the first round with 32.72% of the vote, against 19.74% to ex-right-wing banker Guillermo Lasso, 65, and 19.39% to the left-wing indigenous leader Yaku Perez, 51, according to the final results of the February 7 poll, announced by CNE secretary Santiago Vallejo.
These results were approved by four of the five members of the CNE present at the end of a session which started on Saturday morning and which ended late at night.

The winner of the second round will succeed outgoing president Lenin Moreno, ex-ally of President Correa (2007-2017). Convicted of corruption, the latter, who lives in exile in Belgium, could not be a candidate for the vice-presidency as he would have liked.
