no legal action against a former minister accused of drug trafficking by Washington

Former Mexican Minister of Defense Salvador Cienfuegos in Mexico City in September 2016.

Former Mexican Minister of Defense Salvador Cienfuegos, accused of drug trafficking in the United States where he was imprisoned between October and November, will not be prosecuted by the justice of his country, announced Thursday, January 14, the Mexican parquet.

The floor “Decided not to exercise public action” for the benefit of General Cienfuegos, he said in a statement in which he assures that he has not found any evidence incriminating the former minister.

Prosecution in the United States discontinued

An American judge had already approved, on November 18, the abandonment of the proceedings against the 72-year-old general, who had led the war against the drug cartels from 2012 to 2018, specifying that he would be tried in Mexico.

A surprising decision when Mr. Cienfuegos was arrested on October 15 at Los Angeles airport by the American anti-drug agency (DEA). The latter accused him of drug trafficking and money laundering, between 2015 and 2017, on behalf of the H-2 cartel, heir to the Mafia organization of the Beltran Leyva brothers.
