Before the announcement of this contamination, a change in the president’s calendar had already brought the epidemic to the fore. Donald Trump’s campaign team had indeed moved a meeting scheduled for Saturday in western Wisconsin, to La Crosse, after calls from the mayor of the city and the governor of the state, both Democrats, for it is not holding public gatherings due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases. Presidential meetings are now organized in the open air on airport tarmacs. The manager of the one at La Crosse assured that the meeting had been canceled due to a problem with the rental contract.

Donald Trump had not however given up campaigning in this state, which he must keep, after a surprise victory in 2016, to preserve his hopes of re-election. He had planned to go to a town 200 kilometers away. He was to attend another public meeting the same day in the same state, in Green Bay. Wisconsin ranks third among states that have seen an increase in per capita cases over the past two weeks.
