Czech Barbora Krejcikova wins the final against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

At 25, it was his first Grand Slam title. Czech Barbora Krejcikova (33e) won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros on Saturday June 12, beating Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (32e) 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

“It’s really hard to find the words, I can’t believe what’s happening to me, I can’t believe I just won a Grand Slam tournament”, confided the winner.

His best result in Major, so far, was reaching the round of 16 last year, already at Roland Garros. She was participating in her fifth major tournament, her third on Parisian clay. With this victory, Krejcikova will reach on Monday the 15the WTA rank, the best ranking of his career.

She received the Suzanne-Lenglen trophy from the hands of tennis legend Martina Navratilova, Czechoslovak-turned-American, who won twice in Paris (1982, 1984).

Twelve wins in a row

Perhaps the stakes were too high on Saturday and there was no real fight, with Krejcikova and Pavlyuchenkova failing to play their best tennis at the same time and over time.

There were some winning strokes – 34 for Krejcikova, 23 for Pavlyuchenkova – but there were also a lot of unforced errors – 31 for the Czech and 16 for the Russian.

The 2021 edition is the sixth in a row to crown a winner who had never before won a Grand Slam tournament. Until then, Krejcikova had only one title, won in Strasbourg the week before Roland-Garros. She therefore went from a virgin record to two titles in three weeks and has chained twelve victories.

Also engaged in doubles, Krejcikova, associated with Katerina Siniakova, with whom she won the 2018 edition of the Parisian Major, qualified for the final scheduled for Sunday.

The last player to have reached the singles and doubles finals at Roland Garros the same year was Lucie Safarova in 2015. But the last to have won them was Mary Pierce in 2000.
