Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, 45e player in the WTA rankings, eliminated on Friday July 29 the world number one, the Polish Iga Swiatek, at home in the quarter-finals of the Warsaw tournament (6-1, 1-6, 6-4). Seeded noh 5, Caroline Garcia will face Italian Jasmine Paolini in the semi-finals, with her sights set on the eighth singles title of her career.

The 28-year-old Frenchwoman, who remained on a quarter-final lost in Palermo and a half conceded in Lausanne, offered herself the world number one, who was making her return to competition at home since her elimination in the third round at Wimbledon by another Frenchwoman, Alizé Cornet, who had put an end to a series of thirty-seven consecutive victories.

Excellent return of service

Garcia and Swiatek, who had only faced each other once, in 2019 in Cincinnati (victory for the Pole), each had their set of domination, the first won 6-1 by the Frenchwoman, the second removed on the same brand by the world number one.

Driven by an excellent return of service, Garcia made a first break at 5-3 in the last set, before giving up her serve while serving for the match. But the French then managed to conclude with authority by once again taking the service of the Polish (6-4).

Iga Swiatek, winner of Roland-Garros in 2020 and this year, had not lost a match on clay for more than a year. The other semi-final will pit Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova against Romanian Ana Bogdan.
