UEFA allows 26 players per selection

From 23, they drop to 26. UEFA has decided to allow ” exceptionally “, Tuesday May 4, the selections disputing the next Euro (which will take place from June 11 to July 11) to summon 26 players, instead of 23 usually. The goal is to be able to face the risks of Covid-19 contamination and quarantine.

Claimed by several coaches facing the risk that the pandemic decimates their workforce, this expansion of the main list is unprecedented since the national teams went from 22 to 23 players, during the 2001 Confederations Cup.

On the other hand, as in previous competitions, only 23 players will have to appear on the match sheet. “For each meeting”, specifies the European body. The coaches will be able to adjust this list as the tournament progresses.

Lists before 1er June

The breeders have until 1er June to submit their list of 26 to UEFA. But between that date and their first match, they will be able to freely replace a player in the event of a “Serious injury or illness”, medically certified. During Euro 2016, Adil Rami, Morgan Schneiderlin and Samuel Umtiti had thus replaced Raphaël Varane, Jérémy Mathieu and Lassana Diarra, initially called up.

“For the sake of clarity, the players who have tested positive for Covid-19” or those who have been placed in solitary confinement as “Contact case” fall into the category of “Serious illnesses”, adds UEFA.

In addition, goalkeepers can be replaced before each match. “In the event of physical incapacity, even if one or two guardians on the list are still available”, decided the executive committee.
