"No to corruption" was not written on Michel Platini's jersey in the 1980s

While the suspension of Michel Platini to four years by the sports justice for "Violation of the ethical code" ended in October 2019, an old photo of him surfaced on Facebook. The image, which dates from the 1980s, shows the former number 10 of the Blues next to the Argentine footballer, Diego Maradona. But the legend of the photo, posted by a user of the social network, has nothing to do with reality.

What the photo caption says

Michel Platini poses, on the football field, alongside the legends of the round ball, the Argentinian Maradona and the Brazilian Pelé. According to one of the widely shared publications on Facebook, during this match of " 1986 ”,“ Maradona wears her “no drugs” jersey. Platini says “no to corruption”. Time passes very quickly. " Thousands of people have shared this post. Some ironically, others in the first degree.

WHY IT'S WRONG

Diego Maradona wears a jersey with the inscription "No drug", which is actually quite funny when you consider the serious drug problems that the Argentine legend has known. On the other hand, nothing mentions the corruption of which Michel Platini will be accused a quarter of a century later – which will make him fall from the top of world football. We can see it very well in this image, published by the image bank Getty, where the two players chat together.

The videos shot during the event also leave no room for imagination.

In addition, the date of the photo, "1986", is not the right one. The match was organized two years later. It is in fact the jubilee of the career of "Platoche"; the original photograph was taken by Associate Press photographer Lionel Cironneau on May 23, 1988, at the Nancy stadium. The articles of the time published by Republican East confirm both the date and the event.
