Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, historical figure of Bayern Munich, will step down from his duties at the club on June 30, six months before the date originally scheduled for the handover to Oliver Kahn, the Bavarian club announced on Tuesday 1er June.

The former Bayern player, double Ballon d’Or, had planned to give up his chair as chairman of the executive board on December 31. He has brought forward the deadline so that his designated successor Oliver Kahn can be in charge from the start of the next season. “This is the most strategic and the most logical moment”, says Mr. Rummenigge on the club’s website: “It’s the end of the exercise and a new streak begins with a new team of coaches. ” On the bench of the Bavarian club, Julian Nagelsmann will indeed succeed this summer to Hansi Flick, who will become coach of the German team. “I said two years ago that we were planning a cautious transition, and it is now done”, continues Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

The chairman of the management board, who oversees the company (FC Bayern München AG) hosting the professional structure, is the linchpin of the club. He works in conjunction with the president of FC Bayern, the club with associative status, who is currently Herbert Hainer, successor to Uli Hoeness.

Oliver Kahn, a charismatic former goalkeeper for Bayern and the national team, carries on the tradition of the “Rekordmeister”, whose leaders have traditionally been former players.

Mr. Rummenigge was appointed chairman of the board during the formation of the professional structure in 2002, after having been vice-chairman of the club. During his two decades in power, the “Rekordmeister” experienced the most prolific period in its history, notably with two Champions Leagues (2013, 2020) and 14 German league titles, including the last nine successively.
