Footballer Mason Greenwood faces new charges of sexual assault and death threats

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, arrested by police for rape, is facing new charges of sexual assault and death threats, British media reported on Tuesday 1er February.

For its part, the Greater Manchester police announced on Tuesday that the man in his twenties arrested on Sunday for rape, and whose identity it has not disclosed, “has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats”. According to the British press, it is indeed Mason Greenwood.

Investigators have obtained an extension of the 20-year-old player’s custody. Also according to local media, Mason Greenwood was arrested and taken into custody on Sunday afternoon for counts of rape and assault. The police investigation was opened after the publication on social networks of images and videos showing a young woman with a bloody face and bruises on her body, with the mention “To anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood is really doing to me”.

Suspended by Manchester United ‘until further notice’

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Greater Manchester Police wrote that “investigators have been given more time to speak to a man in his twenties who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman”. “His interrogation continues after magistrates authorized the extension of his police custody until tomorrow, Wednesday February 2”, continued the police, adding that“At this stage of the investigations, he has been arrested again on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats”.

In the hours following the first charges against him on Sunday, Mason Greenwood, considered one of the rising stars of English football, was suspended until further notice from training and competition by his club.

The equipment supplier Nike announced for its part that it had suspended the contract binding it with the player while the video game giant EA Sports announced that it had removed it from the active teams of the FIFA 22 game.
