Banned from 2022 World Cup, Russia withdraws appeal against FIFA

The Russian Football Federation has taken note of its exclusion from the next World Cup in Qatar (November 21-December 18). At the end of March, she withdrew her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision of the International Football Federation (FFA) to ban her national team following the invasion of Ukraine.

“The procedure will be closed shortly”, announced Tuesday, April 5, the CAS in a press release. On March 18, the sports court refused to suspend the sanctions imposed by FIFA pending a decision on the merits.

The Russian team, quarter-finalists of the 2018 World Cup organized in Russia, was thus unable to participate in the qualifying play-offs for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of March, leaving Poland to win its ticket for Doha.

At the same time, the Russian body maintains its procedure against UEFA, the body which oversees football in Europe, which has banned its clubs and selections from European competitions, while its women’s team still hopes to participate in the Euro-2022 this summer in England (July 6 to 31). “No procedural timetable has been established at this time”explained the CAS about this last procedure.
