The political message could not be more clear, at the edge of a year which will be marked by the campaign for the presidential election of November 2020. Donald Trump will participate, Friday January 24 in Washington, in the March for life and will become thus the first American president to go to this annual event against the right to abortion.

" See you on Friday ", tweeted the Republican billionaire on Wednesday, predicting a "Large crowd", above a message calling to participate in the "March for life".

In 2017, Mike Pence had already become the first vice president to attend this gathering. As early as 2018, Donald Trump – who once spoke in favor of the right to abortion – spoke to the thousands of activists gathered in Washington. But he had hitherto done it through a giant screen interposed.

"We are deeply honored to welcome President Trump to the 47e Walk for Life », said the president of this march, Jeanne Mancini, in a press release.

Galvanized anti-abortion activists

Anti-abortion activists have been galvanized since his election by the Supreme Court reshuffle initiated by the White House tenant, who has appointed two judges opposed to abortion.

"Of the appointment of pro-life judges (…) to the reduction of taxpayer funding for abortions at home and abroad, and to the call to stop late abortions, President Trump and his administration have been staunch defenders of life ", welcomed Jeanne Mancini.

The big demonstration is generally organized around the anniversary of the emblematic decision of the Supreme Court "Roe v. Wade " legalizing the voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) in the United States, January 22, 1973.

Several conservative states have adopted very restrictive abortion laws, and hope that the legal battle will lead them to the highest court in the country, thus giving them the possibility of reversing this historic judgment. The first litmus test will take place in March, when the Supreme Court examines a Louisiana restrictive law.
