The incumbent president, Tabaré Vazquez, had made his first mandate from 2005 to 2010 under the banner of the Frente Amplio (Extended Front), the left-wing coalition that is now seeking a fourth term in a row. He had broken with decades of hegemony of the two traditional center-right parties, the National Party and the Colorado Party. Between the two terms of Vazquez (the constitution prohibits the outgoing to be a candidate for re-election), President Jose "Pepe" Mujica (2010-1015), from the Frente Amplio too, had passed a series of progressive laws such as marriage for all, the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy or the legalization of cannabis.
